While podcastings history isnt long they give great insight into subjects like the "Podfather", Adam Curry, who is seen as, the name implies, the forerunner for podcasting. This book is a beginning podcasters bible. That is the very best thing about it and possibly its only downside. It sets out to teach a novice the ways of the podcasting world and achieves that goal. If you have already tried your hand at casting and have a good idea of how it works this book wouldnt be the best choice for more advanced casting techniques. All in all the Absolute Beginners Guide to Podcasting achieves exactly what it is setting out to accomplish, giving beginners a guide to the growing world of podcasting.

This book covers all the Podcasting bases, and IMHO is a bit better than "Podcasting for dummies". However, the author does newbies a disservice by posting screenshots from a $50 commercial sound editing product in addition to the popular and free "Audacity" software.
Podcasting beginners would do well to spend their money on a good USB microphone before plunking down cash for software they can get for free.
If they decide to pursue podcasting further, they can always upgrade the software later when they have a better idea of what they want to do...
Similarly, newbies should not think too much about mixing boards, XLR mics, etc. when just starting out. Lets keep it simple!

Its easy to follow, easy to understand. The only fallback is that it does not offer software but it does reference a website or two where there are free downloads available. Happy Podcasting!

Even if you know nothing about podcasting, you can produce your own cast within hours of getting your hands on this book. But what surprised me is that even if youre a seasoned podcaster youll likely learn some good stuff from this book. Its definitely staying on my resource shelf, especially for the great detailed sections on sound production (both the physical gear like mics and the digital processing stuff).
What sets this book apart, though, is the in-depth discussion these authors deliver about show content. Ive listened to the first 5 minutes of so many podcasts where the personality behind the mic was clearly interesting, but I didnt have the patience to sit through the loose drivel between entertaining or useful nuggets. This book does a great job guiding the podcaster to devote a little more directed energy to preparing a tight high-quality show. As an avid listener I can tell you this is almost required to get me on to minute 6, and a must to get me to subscribe to your cast.
The book has a nice conversational tone, making it a quick read. Its also laid out so that you can easily jump between sections if youre looking for something in particular, or want to save the detailed tech stuff for later.
My only negative comment about the book is that a few of the screenshots didnt print with enough contrast to make them easily readable. Other than that, I wouldnt change a thing. Great book, and a real bargain at less than $20.

At the end of every chapter is a section called "The Absolute Minimum" which gives a synopsis of the best and most necessary info of the chapter. I found that extremely helpful. This is the best book for the beginner because it explains everthing in easy to understand terms without being dry and totally technical.

It must be difficult when youre touted as New Wave revivalists yet you cant convincingly demonstrate that you have the slightest grasp on the genre. Sure, this record is stuffed with 80s references, both musical and lyrical, but they only go as deep as evoking images and moods of John Hughes films. From sappy lyrics about parties and party dresses, right down to the trying way too hard to be 80s album title. In short, they have the substance of an 80s party band, yet theyre too wimpy and sentimental to play at any party. They really shouldve just put a photo of Molly Ringwald on the cover to drive the point home.
Truthfully, the music only occasionally hints at New Wave, as on the title track and the pretty, synth-based ballad "You Belong With Us." But, more often they play their songs like a brash 90s indie pop band, eschewing (or completely oblivious to) the subtlety, atmosphere, and melodicism so intrinsic to New Wave.
Particularly irksome is the male vocalists fake English accent. Sure, English accents sound beautiful to these ears, but only when the person singing is English! It plain smacks of poseurdom and is all the more frustrating given that the female vocalist has a pleasing, lovely voice that we only get to hear some of the time.
Clearly there are bands guilty of far greater crimes against humanity. But, I suppose what bothers me so much are the comparisons to brilliant 80s bands like New Order, the Cure, the Smiths, etc., that My Favorites fans like to toss around, when My Favorite absolutely pales next to these bands. Maybe to all the indie kids who were too young to experience 80s music beyond the John Hughes film soundtracks their older sisters were playing, this stuff might seem like a fairly accurate throwback. But to people with a much firmer grasp on the genre, the comparisons are inaccurate and the substance-free music is of very little consequence.

Ive been a fan of My Favorite for years, having done sound for them way back in the mid-90s at a little dump of a bar on Lond Island. They blew me away back then, and they continue to impress me today, with this surprising comeback after years of hearing absolutely zero (:)) about them! This full length (certainly not their first, but first official I suppose) is an impressive blend of new wave synths, dark lyrics about suburban angst and an overall emotive feel...

Although the album sounds strange (hissy highs but in a muffled kind of way), the songs shine through here. Absolute Beginners Again, Informers, The Truth About Lake Ronkonkoma, all excellent. Not a big fan of Party Crashers. Question: who out there is better, Mr. Negative review?

I recommend this CD, its very catchy and you can listen to it over and over. I drove from Delaware to Arizona and listened to it at least a handful of times. Never got tired of it! Normally not into this type of music, but I enjoyed it a lot. VERY reasonably priced as well! Get a lot of bang for the buck. =)

This is one amazing piece of work. Can you seriously say you are hearing anything better than "Absolute Zero" or "Absolute Beginners Again" on the radio these days? This band takes what was good about 80s music to a whole new level. Sure there are numerous New Wave influences here, but this CD is a testament to the fact that My Favorite have a style all their own. Whats most impressive about this CD, a virtual rarity these days even among the most popular artists, is that there is not one bad, or even mediocre track included. This is simply a superb collection of songs that one can listen to over and over again.

Much more polished then their (nearly impossible to find) "The Day the World Turned Blue" full length and "Briton Riot Tape" first demo, "Love At Absolute Zero" will appeal to any fan of New Order, The Smiths, The The, or newer acts such as Belle & Sebastian (less acoustic), The Sea & Cake, etc. Dont forget to pick up their 3 new EPs as well, or simply get "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives", which includes all three EPs plus a disc of remixes... you WONT be disappointed... these guys write amazing songs with equally amazing lyrics, and capture suburban life like no other band around today. Not to be missed...

No special extras, but for the price a good single to own : I own almost all of Amorosi's singles and albums so I picked this single up. It only has one version of each song: Shine, and Absolutely Everybody. They're great songs but you'd be better served getting the albums "The Power" and "Turn to Me." Amorosi is a great singer, you may remember her in the Sydney games singing "Heroes Live Forever" (a song now featured on "Turn to Me"). She takes writing credits on quite a few of her songs and they all suit her style. "Shine" is more of an inspirational ballad with the message of picking yourself up and shining in the world around you. "Absolutely Everybody" is considerably more upbeat. A very fun song about everybody needing everybody else. It's enough to make you imagine that the world isn't half bad. This would make a great gift for someone who you think will enjoy Amorosi's music but without the price tag of a full import cd or for yourself if you're unconvinced by sound clips and reviews about how great Amorosi is, pay the small price for this single and listen for yourself! She's really amazing and so much better than all the studio manufactured "pop" we have in the US at the moment. Also, this is a great gift for a friend or a sister, daughter, etc. that you think would like some inspiring or fun songs. If you enjoy this, buy her albums. You won't regret it.

No special extras, but for the price a good single to own : I own almost all of Amorosi's singles and albums so I picked this single up. It only has one version of each song: Shine, and Absolutely Everybody. They're great songs but you'd be better served getting the albums "The Power" and "Turn to Me." Amorosi is a great singer, you may remember her in the Sydney games singing "Heroes Live Forever" (a song now featured on "Turn to Me"). She takes writing credits on quite a few of her songs and they all suit her style. "Shine" is more of an inspirational ballad with the message of picking yourself up and shining in the world around you. "Absolutely Everybody" is considerably more upbeat. A very fun song about everybody needing everybody else. It's enough to make you imagine that the world isn't half bad. This would make a great gift for someone who you think will enjoy Amorosi's music but without the price tag of a full import cd or for yourself if you're unconvinced by sound clips and reviews about how great Amorosi is, pay the small price for this single and listen for yourself! She's really amazing and so much better than all the studio manufactured "pop" we have in the US at the moment. Also, this is a great gift for a friend or a sister, daughter, etc. that you think would like some inspiring or fun songs. If you enjoy this, buy her albums. You won't regret it.

Terrible Movie...I Wish I could return it and get my 5 dollars back. The fact that its low budget is not even an excuse. The acting is beyond bad and the story line is terrible.
-One of the main characters loses her husband in a phony... unreal tragic scene and she barely sheds a tear. I stress A TEAR literally.
-The main scientist/lead actor is in some ice cave at one point that is several hundred feet below the surface and his friend is killed...At this point you figure the main character is trapped with ice falling and the cave that he was in was caving in. Youd think the director would use this window to thrill us on how the scientist managed to get out of such a tough situation. Nope. As soon as the friend dies, they cut to the next scene where the scientist is in some lab doing test. This left me wondering for the rest of the entire movie.. HOW DID HE GET OUT OF THAT SITUATION?
Its like if you were watching a movie based on a plane and the bad guys were killed, but the plane is flying unmanned. You would want to know how the hero landed the plane. It would be a huge let down for the hero to kill all the bad guys and then the next scene is the hero at the hospital receiving minor medical treatment. You want to see how the hero landed or escaped the unmanned plane scene.
- Irony- The lead scientist is concerned about the Earths polarity, the temperatures, and global warming. His concerns are so great and deeply rooted that he drives around in a Hummer (H2) getting 9 mpg while emitting 3.4 metric tons of carbon emissions per year. Yes this scientist is really concerned about the earth.
-As temperatures reach absolute zero--The cast is running towards a safe room that is suppose to protect them. Well, On the way to the room, the lead scientists boss stops running and decides to collect some contract papers or something and dies as the ice freezes him. Pretty realistic... The entire Miami area is being frozen and the boss is worried about contracts.
Please do not buy this movie..Unless you like laughing at bad acting, terrible plots, and terrible animations. Im pretty sure you could find all the explosions used in this film by searching for "explosion gif" in any search engine. I can not believe this movie came out in 2006 or at all for that matter.

OK, the science is nonsense. And winds at absolute zero? Winds=friction=heat, so nonsense. Still, its nice to see Jeff Fahey (an amazing actor note how different he is, vocally, posture, etc., from his role on The Lost). "Science is always right" he says. Nope. One could argue the opposite. Still and all, the script is very good, with some great lines, and theres lots of action. The FX arent up to Day After Tomorrow, but arent totally hokey. Its a B movie, but a good B movie, and definitely not a D movie (like Sunshine!). For the price, a real bargain, and a great addition to your disaster film library.
One little oddity: I guess the script called for Faheys character to be David Koch, and the DVD case repeats this. But everyone calls him David Kotchman (or Kotzman).

This movie is pure garbage, your time is better spent watching weeds grow than viewing this "masterpiece" Erika Eleniak, the only reason, most people watched this, looks like she gained 40 pounds for this movie. Dont waste your time!

Having watched this program on TV with fascination, I could not wait long enough to obtain the DVD. When it arrived, watching it confirmed my view that this is one of the most stimulating programs ever. Good to watch again, and again, and with a gap, even again!

This documentary was originally created and broadcast by the BBC and then NOVA purchased it for U.S. Public Television. However, NOVA cut about 14 minutes of footage to include plugs for other NOVA programs. I am hoping this DVD release will put that time back.
This program traces the scientific evolution of the search for absolute zero, from the 17th century through today. It is extremely well done. Like many such programs, it takes high concept science (in this case physics) and brings it to the people. There are reenactments, interviews with experts in the field, and historical footage. The rivalries between past scientists, and the repercussions of such, are frankly examined. The creators did a superb job making the topic approachable without condescending to a non-scientist audience. For the first time, I was able to grasp such concepts as the Bose-Einstein Condensate, absolute zero and how lasers can "cool" atoms. I work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where Eric Cornell did his Nobel Prize-winning work (at Jilla). He is featured in the documentary and easily expresses in laymans terms the ideas and methods his team used. There is some humor throughout the piece (including how he forgot to bow to the king while accepting his Nobel Prize!) to lighten the subject matter. Just recently NIST hosted a lecture with Russell Donnelly, the physicist who helped spearhead this documentary. He worked in cold temperature physics, and was asked for input to the book "Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold." When he looked through the book he was dismayed to see no graphs, or photos or any "science." But once he started reading, he was amazed at how the author told the story of the science through the lives of the scientistis. He realized it would make a great documentary that could reach out to the public - whose support helps keep funding for such endeavors. He also spoke about the extensive process of requesting a grant from NSF, working with the BBC and then NOVA to put this together. He showed footage from the documetary itself and I was amazed at the quality. Unfortunately, when NOVA broadcast the show in January it went up against the New Hampshire primary and then the American Idol premier. Yet, it still managed to draw millions of viewers. I am glad they are releasing it on DVD. I would love to rewatch it, and have the ability to rewind certain points that I may have missed.
Overall, I highly recommend this program to everyone. It would be a great tool for high school science teachers, for fans of Carl Sagans "Cosmos," and of The National Geographic Channel and other such venues.

This DVD is a "must have". The inclusion of historical footage tracing the widespread use of ice, on through to the search for how low can you get, and the subsequent discoveries which went on to commercial ventures for things we take for granted, is both facinating and educational. The patience of the scientific community never ceases to amaze, in the quest for the truth about the world we live in. Congratulations to the production team that put it all together in this DVD.

This is a wonderfully put together documentary, my 11 year son was captivated with interest. The re-enactments are excellent. There are two distint films here, the first was the best for me as towards the end of the second it seemed to get a little mundane as scientists were spending a fortune to get just one ten millionth lower.
Definately worth adding to any good documentary collection.

Having watched this program on TV with fascination, I could not wait long enough to obtain the DVD. When it arrived, watching it confirmed my view that this is one of the most stimulating programs ever. Good to watch again, and again, and with a gap, even again!

This documentary was originally created and broadcast by the BBC and then NOVA purchased it for U.S. Public Television. However, NOVA cut about 14 minutes of footage to include plugs for other NOVA programs. I am hoping this DVD release will put that time back.
This program traces the scientific evolution of the search for absolute zero, from the 17th century through today. It is extremely well done. Like many such programs, it takes high concept science (in this case physics) and brings it to the people. There are reenactments, interviews with experts in the field, and historical footage. The rivalries between past scientists, and the repercussions of such, are frankly examined. The creators did a superb job making the topic approachable without condescending to a non-scientist audience. For the first time, I was able to grasp such concepts as the Bose-Einstein Condensate, absolute zero and how lasers can "cool" atoms. I work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where Eric Cornell did his Nobel Prize-winning work (at Jilla). He is featured in the documentary and easily expresses in laymans terms the ideas and methods his team used. There is some humor throughout the piece (including how he forgot to bow to the king while accepting his Nobel Prize!) to lighten the subject matter. Just recently NIST hosted a lecture with Russell Donnelly, the physicist who helped spearhead this documentary. He worked in cold temperature physics, and was asked for input to the book "Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold." When he looked through the book he was dismayed to see no graphs, or photos or any "science." But once he started reading, he was amazed at how the author told the story of the science through the lives of the scientistis. He realized it would make a great documentary that could reach out to the public - whose support helps keep funding for such endeavors. He also spoke about the extensive process of requesting a grant from NSF, working with the BBC and then NOVA to put this together. He showed footage from the documetary itself and I was amazed at the quality. Unfortunately, when NOVA broadcast the show in January it went up against the New Hampshire primary and then the American Idol premier. Yet, it still managed to draw millions of viewers. I am glad they are releasing it on DVD. I would love to rewatch it, and have the ability to rewind certain points that I may have missed.
Overall, I highly recommend this program to everyone. It would be a great tool for high school science teachers, for fans of Carl Sagans "Cosmos," and of The National Geographic Channel and other such venues.

This DVD is a "must have". The inclusion of historical footage tracing the widespread use of ice, on through to the search for how low can you get, and the subsequent discoveries which went on to commercial ventures for things we take for granted, is both facinating and educational. The patience of the scientific community never ceases to amaze, in the quest for the truth about the world we live in. Congratulations to the production team that put it all together in this DVD.

This is a wonderfully put together documentary, my 11 year son was captivated with interest. The re-enactments are excellent. There are two distint films here, the first was the best for me as towards the end of the second it seemed to get a little mundane as scientists were spending a fortune to get just one ten millionth lower.
Definately worth adding to any good documentary collection.
